Monica Witt is a former United States Air Force intelligence specialist and defense contractor who defected to Iran in 2013 and was later charged with espionage. She gained public attention for allegedly providing classified national defense information to the Iranian government, exposing undercover U.S. intelligence personnel, and becoming the subject of a $200,000 FBI reward for information leading to her capture.

Quick Facts

Full Name: Monica Elfriede Witt
Age: 47 (born April 8, 1979)
Nationality: American
Occupation: Former U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant, Former Defense Contractor, Fugitive
Known For: Espionage charges for defecting to Iran; FBI Most Wanted list
Marital Status: Not confirmed
Children: Not confirmed

Early Life and Background

Witt was born in El Paso, Texas, on April 8, 1979, to Kilcha Lee Yi and Harry Hans Witt. Her mother died shortly before she entered active duty in 1997, and she later drifted from her relatives. By 2011, she was living in subsidized housing in Falls Church, Virginia, and was reportedly homeless at one point.

Career and Achievements

Witt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August 1997 as a linguist, studying the Persian language at the Defense Language Institute. As an Airborne Cryptologic Language Analyst, she deployed several times to conduct classified missions and collect signals intelligence, serving in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and earning the Air Medal from President George W. Bush.

She later transferred to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) as a counterintelligence special agent, gaining access to SECRET and TOP SECRET national defense information, including the true names of undercover intelligence personnel and a special access program (SAP) housing classified information.

After separating from the Air Force as a technical sergeant in 2008, Witt worked as a defense contractor for Booz Allen Hamilton and Chenega Federal Systems, continuing to handle sensitive counterintelligence operations until August 2010.

Major Event or Controversy

Witt converted to Islam in 2012 and became increasingly focused on the religion and the Middle East. She traveled to Iran for two all-expenses-paid conferences that the Justice Department says promoted anti-Western propaganda. In 2013, with assistance from Marzieh Hashemi a suspected Iranian intelligence operative Witt defected to Iran.

In February 2019, a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia indicted Witt on charges of espionage, including conspiracy to deliver and delivering national defense information to representatives of the Iranian government. She allegedly provided information that endangered U.S. personnel and their families stationed abroad, and conducted research on behalf of the Iranian regime to help target her former colleagues. Four Iranian nationals were also charged with running a cyber campaign targeting Witt’s former coworkers.

Why She Is In the News

On May 14, 2026, the FBI announced a $200,000 reward for information leading to Witt’s capture and prosecution a significant escalation in the decade-long hunt for the fugitive. The announcement comes amid ongoing war between the United States and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026. FBI Special Agent Daniel Wierzbicki stated, “The FBI has not forgotten and believes that during this critical moment in Iran’s history, there is someone who knows something about her whereabouts”.

Conclusion

Monica Witt is a former U.S. counterintelligence agent who allegedly betrayed her country by defecting to Iran and handing over classified information to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Now 47 and believed to be residing in Iran under the aliases Fatemah Zahra and Narges Witt, she remains on the FBI’s Most Wanted list as authorities continue their pursuit.
