The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has officially announced a temporary traffic closure at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange. The disruption will take effect on Saturday, March 14, 2026, and will last for the duration of the weekend.
Motorists who frequently use the Accra-Madina stretch of the N1 highway are being advised to prepare for significant travel changes this weekend.
According to a statement from the Authority, the closure is required to allow contractors to carry out essential bridge expansion works on the busy corridor. The Tetteh Quarshie Interchange is one of the busiest intersections in the capital, connecting major routes to and from the city center, Madina, and beyond.
While the GHA assured the public that the project is necessary for long-term infrastructure improvement, they acknowledged that the work would cause immediate inconvenience. Commuters have been urged to plan their journeys well in advance to avoid being caught in slow-moving traffic.
“We encourage all drivers to seek alternative routes where possible during this period,” a representative for the Ghana Highway Authority stated. “The expansion works are critical for the safety and durability of the bridge, but we understand the frustration delays can cause. We ask for the cooperation of the public.”
Authorities suggest that motorists traveling towards Madina or Aburi consider leaving earlier than usual or using side roads to bypass the interchange. Drivers heading into Accra are also advised to allow for extra travel time.
The GHA has assured the public that they are working to complete the works as quickly and efficiently as possible to reopen the roads to normal traffic flow by the start of the next working week.
