Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo is reportedly receiving medical treatment after gunmen allegedly opened fire on her vehicle on Sunday, in an incident linked to an escalating succession battle within the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The shooting is said to have occurred at the residence of Safo’s younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, where he was reportedly organising supporters in connection with efforts to install him as successor to their late father, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. Witnesses claim Safo was present at the scene when armed men, allegedly acting on the orders of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, opened fire on her vehicle, discharging an estimated 15 rounds. One bullet reportedly grazed the former legislator near her neck.
Safo was rushed for medical attention following the incident. Sources close to her say she is currently in stable condition. Police from the Dome District Command were alerted and deployed to the scene as tensions escalated, though the Ghana Police Service has not yet issued an official statement on the shooting.
The incident is the latest flashpoint in a deepening rift within the Kristo Asafo family over who should lead the movement following the death of Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. The succession question has already spilled into the courts, with some family members challenging attempts to install Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the next leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission. A court injunction was reportedly secured to halt his planned installation, a move that appears to have heightened tensions within the family in the days leading up to Sunday’s shooting.
Investigations into the incident are expected to begin. As of filing, no arrests have been reported and the allegations linking Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena to the attack remain unverified by police.
