Early Life and Background

Alonso was born in Tolosa, in Spain’s Basque Country, to a family of footballers. His father, Periko Alonso, was a La Liga-winning midfielder for Real Sociedad and Barcelona. His older brother, Mikel, also played professional football, while his younger brother Jon is a referee. Alonso lived in Barcelona during his first six years before moving to San Sebastián, where he developed his skills playing on local beaches before joining the Real Sociedad youth academy.

Career and Achievements (as a Player)

Alonso’s playing career is decorated with the highest honors. He began at Real Sociedad before joining Liverpool in 2004 for £10.7 million, where he formed a legendary midfield partnership with Steven Gerrard. In his debut season, he scored Liverpool’s third goal in the miraculous 2005 Champions League final comeback against AC Milan.

After five years at Anfield, he moved to Real Madrid in 2009, winning La Liga (2012), two Copa del Rey titles, and the club’s 10th European Cup in 2014. He finished his playing career at Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2017, winning three consecutive Bundesliga titles and the German Cup . For Spain, Alonso earned 114 caps, winning the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.

Managerial Career

Alonso began his coaching career with Real Madrid’s youth academy in 2018 before managing Real Sociedad’s B team, leading them to promotion to the Segunda Division for the first time since 1962.

His breakthrough came at Bayer Leverkusen, where he took charge in October 2022. In the 2023-24 season, he led Leverkusen to an historic unbeaten Bundesliga title the first in the club’s history along with the German Cup and a run to the Europa League final.

That success earned him a return to Real Madrid as head coach in June 2025. Despite winning all but three of his first 20 matches and leading Madrid to a five-point lead in La Liga by November, he was sacked in January 2026 after a 3-2 Supercopa de España final loss to Barcelona, following reported internal tensions with senior players. He departed with a 70.6% win record from 34 matches.

Major Event or Controversy

No major controversies are associated with Xabi Alonso.

Why He Is In the News

Alonso is in the news after Chelsea officially announced his appointment as manager on a four-year contract on May 17, 2026. The appointment comes after a turbulent season in which Chelsea sacked both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, finishing ninth in the Premier League with no European qualification. Alonso will take over on July 1, 2026, tasked with bringing stability and competing for trophies at Stamford Bridge.

Conclusion

Xabi Alonso is one of football’s most cerebral figures, having conquered the game as a player with a World Cup and two Champions League titles. After a mixed start to his managerial career immortal with Leverkusen but short-lived at Real Madrid he now faces his biggest challenge: resurrecting Chelsea from its worst Premier League finish in decades and ending the club’s cycle of instability.
