Tyler James Robinson is a 23-year-old American man accused of the high-profile murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. He gained national public attention in 2025 when he was charged with aggravated murder for allegedly shooting Kirk at a Utah university campus, and again in June 2026 when a judge ruled his ex-roommate cannot testify in person at his preliminary hearing .

Quick Facts

Full Name: Tyler James Robinson
Age: 23 (born c. 2003)
Nationality: American
Occupation: Student (formerly at Utah Valley University)
Known For: Being the accused murderer of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA
Marital Status: Not confirmed
Children: None confirmed

Early Life and Background

Tyler Robinson was raised in a Mormon family in southwestern Utah by Republican parents . Described by friends and family as a “brilliant high school student” and an accomplished pianist, he was considered a “generally good kid” before the incident . At the time of the shooting, he was 22 years old and had been living with a roommate, who was also his romantic partner . Reports indicate he had become increasingly political and had shown what FBI officials called “multiple warning signs” in the months leading up to the shooting .

The Alleged Crime

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a crowd of approximately 3,000 people at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah . Kirk was struck by a single bullet to the neck from a sniper rifle fired from a nearby rooftop .

Authorities launched a massive manhunt, with the FBI releasing CCTV images of a “person of interest” wearing a black baseball cap, sunglasses, and a dark long-sleeve shirt . Robinson surrendered to authorities on September 11, 2025, after a family friend convinced him and his parents he should turn himself in .

Charges and Evidence

Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of children . Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty .

Evidence presented by prosecutors includes: DNA matching Robinson’s found on the trigger of the rifle and on a fired cartridge casing , a note found under Robinson’s keyboard that read: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it” , and a text message Robinson allegedly sent to his roommate saying he had “enough of his hatred” and that “some hate can’t be negotiated out” .

Why He Is In the News

Robinson is in the news after a Utah judge ruled that his ex-roommate, who was also his romantic partner, will not be required to testify in person at his preliminary hearing set for July 2026 . Defense lawyers wanted to subpoena the roommate to challenge the credibility of recorded statements they made to police. However, Judge Tony Graf denied the request, stating that “a preliminary hearing is not a trial on the merits, but a gateway to the finder of fact” — meaning the roommate’s credibility can be challenged later if the case proceeds to trial . Robinson has not yet entered a plea .

Conclusion

Tyler Robinson is a former Utah college student now at the center of one of the most politically charged murder cases in recent U.S. history, accused of assassinating a prominent conservative figure. With the death penalty on the table and a preliminary hearing scheduled for early July, his case continues to attract national attention amid debates over political extremism and the limits of free speech.
