Jeff Daniels is an American actor, director, writer, and musician known for his versatility across film, television, and stage . He gained public attention in June 2026 when it was announced he would star opposite Oscar winner Brendan Fraser in the cosmic sci-fi thriller Starman, directed by Josh Wakely .

Jeff Daniels was born in Athens, Georgia, on February 19, 1955 . He discovered his passion for performing in high school, appearing in musicals, and later moved to New York in 1976 to pursue acting . He made his Broadway debut in the play Gemini in 1977 .

Career and Achievements

Daniels’ career spans over four decades, marked by his willingness to take risks across genres . His film debut came in Miloš Forman’s Ragtime (1981) . He received three Golden Globe nominations for The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Something Wild (1986), and The Squid and the Whale (2005) .

In 1994, Daniels starred in the hit comedy Dumb and Dumber opposite Jim Carrey, a role his agents initially advised against . He has also appeared in Gettysburg, Speed, The Martian, Looper, and Steve Jobs .

On television, Daniels won two Primetime Emmy Awards: Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for HBO’s The Newsroom (2012–2014) and Best Supporting Actor for the Netflix miniseries Godless (2017) . He received a third Emmy nomination for The Looming Tower (2018) and played FBI Director James Comey in Showtime’s The Comey Rule (2020) .

Daniels has also received three Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Play: God of Carnage (2009), Blackbird (2016), and Aaron Sorkin’s To Kill a Mockingbird (2018–2021), in which he played Atticus Finch . He is the founder and executive director of the Purple Rose Theatre Company in Michigan .
