Jamie Vardy is a former England international striker known for one of the most remarkable rises in football history from playing non-league football while working in a factory to becoming a Premier League champion and Golden Boot winner. He gained global attention as the spearhead of Leicester City’s miraculous 2015-16 title triumph, and again in May 2026 as reports emerged that the 39-year-old is being lined up for an emotional return to his boyhood club, Sheffield Wednesday.

Quick Facts

Full Name: Jamie Richard Vardy
Age: 39 (born January 11, 1987)
Nationality: English
Occupation: Professional Footballer (Striker)
Known For: Premier League winner with Leicester City (2015-16); Premier League Golden Boot winner (2019-20); record 11 consecutive Premier League games with a goal
Marital Status: Married to Rebekah Nicholson (since 2016)

Early Life and Background

Vardy was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and grew up as a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter. He joined the Owls’ academy as a boy but was released at age 16 for being “too small.” The rejection sent him into non-league football with Stocksbridge Park Steels, where he worked in a factory making medical splints to supplement his meager football wages.

Career and Achievements

Vardy’s rise through football’s pyramid is legendary. After scoring prolifically for Stocksbridge and then FC Halifax Town, he signed for Fleetwood Town in 2011 for a then-non-league record fee of £17,000. In 2012, Leicester City took a £1 million gamble on the non-league sta the first seven-figure transfer for a non-league player in English football.

At Leicester, Vardy became a phenomenon. In 2015-16, he scored 24 goals in 38 games as the Foxes defied 5,000-1 odds to win the Premier League the greatest upset in English football history. He set a record by scoring in 11 consecutive league games, breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s mark. At age 33 in 2019-20, he won the Premier League Golden Boot with 23 goals, becoming the oldest player to do so. He finished his Leicester career with exactly 200 goals in 500 appearances, adding an FA Cup win in 2021.

Vardy earned 26 caps for England, scoring 7 goals, and was part of the squad that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

He left Leicester in 2025 after 13 years and joined Italian side Cremonese on a free transfer. Despite a bright start that saw him win Serie A Player of the Month in November, his first season in Italy has yielded seven goals in 28 appearances, with Cremonese fighting relegation.

Why He Is In the News

Vardy is in the news after reports emerged on May 18, 2026, that Sheffield Wednesday his boyhood club have “discussed” a potential summer move for the veteran striker . Vardy is approaching the end of his one-year deal with Cremonese and will soon become a free agent. The Owls, currently preparing for League One football, see the emotional pull of a homecoming as a potential factor, though a return to Leicester has also been speculated as more likely should Vardy drop down to the third tier.

Conclusion

Jamie Vardy is a one-of-a-kind footballer whose trajectory from factory worker and non-league castaway to Premier League champion and record-breaker is unlikely ever to be repeated. As he approaches his 40th year, the prospect of an emotional return to Sheffield Wednesday the club that released him as a teenager would bring his remarkable story full circle, closing a chapter that began in the steel city decades ago.
