Jeffries was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York’s Crown Heights neighborhood. His mother was a social worker and his father a substance-abuse counselor. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, a master’s from Georgetown, and a law degree from New York University.

Jeffries began his political career in the New York State Assembly, winning his seat in 2006 after two earlier losses. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, representing New York’s 8th District. He championed criminal justice reform, introducing a federal ban on police chokeholds after Eric Garner’s death and supporting the First Step Act of 2018. In 2019, he became chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. In 2020, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi selected him as one of seven impeachment managers in Trump’s first Senate trial.
