Emma Raducanu is a British professional tennis player known for her historic victory at the US Open. She gained public attention as a teenage qualifier who won a Grand Slam title without dropping a single set.

Quick Facts

Full Name: Emma Raducanu
Age: 23 (born November 13, 2002)
Nationality: British
Occupation: Professional Tennis Player
Known For: Winning the 2021 US Open as a qualifier
Marital Status: Not publicly disclosed
Children: None

Early Life and Background

Emma Raducanu was born in Toronto, Canada, to a Romanian father (Ian) and a Chinese mother (Renee). Her family moved to Bromley, South London, when she was just two years old. She began playing tennis at the age of five and was quickly identified for her talent, joining the national youth system by the age of 12. Beyond tennis, Raducanu is known for her academic diligence, completing her A-Levels in mathematics and English during the summer of her breakout year in 2021.

Career and Achievements

Raducanu turned professional in 2018, competing primarily on the ITF circuit. However, her career trajectory changed forever in 2021. Ranked 150th in the world, she arrived at the US Open having to play three qualifying matches just to enter the main draw . She proceeded to dominate the tournament, defeating top players like Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari. In the final, she defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6–4, 6–3.

This victory made her the first qualifier in Open Era history to win a Grand Slam singles title. She became the first British woman to win a major singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977. For her achievements, she won the WTA Newcomer of the Year award and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Her career-high ranking is World No. 10.

Major Event or Controversy

While the US Open win is her defining moment, Raducanu has frequently faced scrutiny regarding injuries and coaching changes. After her 2021 victory, she struggled with consistency, often parting ways with coaches and dealing with physical setbacks, including surgeries on both wrists and an ankle in 2023. She has consistently worked to rebuild her ranking and fitness following these interruptions.

Why she is in the News

Raducanu is in the news because she withdrew from the 2026 Madrid Open, marking her third consecutive tournament withdrawal. She has not played a match since early March due to a viral illness she contracted in February, and she continues to suffer from lingering post-viral symptoms. She is hopeful to return at the Italian Open in Rome starting May 4.

Conclusion

Emma Raducanu remains one of the most talented and marketable stars in tennis, despite her struggles with consistency and fitness. As she works to recover from illness, the sports world continues to watch closely to see if she can recapture the magical form of her 2021 US Open run.
