Elon Musk is an entrepreneur, inventor, and business magnate who has become the wealthiest person in human history. He gained global public attention for co-founding PayPal, revolutionizing the electric vehicle market with Tesla, and for pulling off the largest IPO in Wall Street history with SpaceX making him the world’s first trillionaire.

Quick Facts

· Full Name: Elon Reeve Musk
· Age: 54 (born June 28, 1971)
· Nationality: American (originally South African)
· Occupation: CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, CTO of X (formerly Twitter), Founder of The Boring Company and Neuralink
· Known For: World’s first trillionaire; SpaceX’s record-breaking $75 billion IPO; Revolutionizing space travel
· Marital Status: Single (divorced multiple times)
· Children: 12 (including one child with musician Grimes)

Early Life and Background

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, to a South African father (an electromechanical engineer) and a Canadian mother (a model and dietitian). A voracious reader, he taught himself computer programming and at age 12 sold a video game called Blastar for $500. He briefly attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada at age 17, eventually transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in physics and economics.

Career and Achievements

Musk’s career is defined by audacious bets on the future. After selling PayPal to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002, he used his proceeds to found Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) that same year.

For years, experts gave SpaceX a slim chance of survival. “I gave SpaceX a 10 percent chance of succeeding at all,” Musk admitted on the eve of its IPO. Yet the company defied physics and finance alike, pioneering reusable rockets, launching the Starlink satellite internet network (now with 10.4 million subscribers), and capturing billions in NASA contracts.

In 2025, Musk consolidated his empire by acquiring his own AI company, xAI, which includes the social media platform X and the chatbot Grok, folding them into the SpaceX conglomerate.

The IPO That Broke Wall Street

SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq on June 12, 2026, under the ticker “SPCX” in what the financial world instantly dubbed the greatest IPO in history.

Musk completely rewrote the rulebook. Instead of the traditional investor roadshow to gauge demand, SpaceX announced a fixed price of $135 per share a “take-it-or-leave-it” offer. The company allocated an unheard-of 20-25% of shares to everyday retail investors, bypassing the usual Wall Street elite.

The results were staggering. Investor demand exceeded $350 billion, making the offering four times oversubscribed. SpaceX sold 556 million shares, raising $75 billion more than double the previous record held by Saudi Aramco. This valued SpaceX at $1.77 trillion before a single share traded publicly.

When trading opened the next morning, shares immediately gapped up to $150 and surged past $166, pushing the company’s market capitalization above $2 trillion.

Trillionaire Status

That initial jump made history. Elon Musk controls approximately 84.4% of SpaceX’s voting power, representing roughly 50% of the company’s stock. At the $2 trillion valuation, his stake was instantly worth $860 billion from SpaceX alone.

Adding his other holdings including a roughly 20% stake in Tesla valued at about $300 billion and his ownership of X Musk’s net worth crossed $1.1 trillion, making him the first trillionaire in recorded history.

For context, Musk is now individually wealthier than the combined net worth of Jeff Bezos, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Larry Ellison. He is also richer than the entire annual GDP of Taiwan, Ireland, Sweden, and his native South Africa.

Why He Is In the News

Musk is in the news for the spectacular public debut of SpaceX, which turned thousands of current and former employees into millionaires overnight. The IPO, which minted 400 new multi-millionaires, has reshuffled the tech sector and forced index funds to rebalance their holdings. With fast-track inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 expected within 15 days, SpaceX will soon become a mandatory holding for millions of passive 401(k) and pension accounts.

Conclusion

Elon Musk went from a lonely kid in South Africa who taught himself to code to the richest human being who ever lived. He did it not by mining gold or trading oil, but by literally trying to go where no one has gone before. Whether he is a visionary genius or a volatile showman, the financial markets have placed the biggest bet in history on the man who promises to put humans on Mars.
